Over the next couple of weeks, the City of Winnipeg will be sending out crews to target-spray herbicide on the Canada Thistle in and around the Hydro Corridor.
Canada Thistle is a perennial, noxious weed that has spear-like leaves with sharp barbs on them. Canada Thistle has a deep, extensive root system and the plant can grow back from even a small piece of root.
Spot-spraying the thistle helps control the flowering of the weed. Their leaves absorb the herbicide, which then penetrates down into their roots, killing the plant. This helps to reduce current growth among the native grasses as well and reduces the potential for future regrowth.
