The new year has begun and 2016 was an exciting year in Sage Creek with new phases being released, additions to the Village Centre and many events. Here are some of our highlights from 2016 and we’re also giving you a peek into what you can expect to see happen in 2017.
The Growth of the Village Centre
The Village Centre has become an integral part of Sage Creek, bringing new business and amenities residents and other Winnipeggers to enjoy. There have been so many changes in 2016 to be excited about.
Orangetheory Fitness opened early this summer with the purpose of providing high-intensity fat burning workouts in just 60 minutes. It has been quite a success since its opening for both fitness enthusiasts and those looking to try something new. Marquis Dance Academy also opened their new studio with dance classes for all ages and we’re excited that they call Sage Creek home.
For those looking to grab a bite to eat, there are many options in the Village Centre to choose from. Hiro Sushi, a Japanese restaurant, and RockWood Urban Grill both opened their doors this year, as well as the most recent addition – Freshii.
Events for Every Occasion
Any occasion is a reason to celebrate in Sage Creek, especially if it’s an excuse to get out and have some fun. The Sage Creek Residents' Association plays a huge role in all the exciting events that take place throughout the year, which would not be possible without their hard work and dedication. There were many events like the SCRA Spring Fundraiser, 3rd Annual Garage Sale, Movie Night in the Park, which were all a success. To get you in a holiday spirit, they held events like Tricks or Treats on the Trails, PJs & Pancakes with Santa and hosted a Christmas Decorating Contest to brighten up the community.
2016 also saw the Sage Creek Holiday Light Show on Snowberry Circle. Brought to you by Qualico Communities, the Light Show was a fun and festive display for visitors from the community and across the city of Winnipeg.
Welcoming of New SCRA Board Members
On top of all the fantastic events, the SCRA appointed new board members who will take on the roles of ensuring the positive and continual growth of Sage Creek. They will help with the development of committees for fundraising, coordinating events and developing partnerships. We'd like to welcome the new and returning directors to the board; Keren Taylor-Hughes (Vice-President), Jason Walsh (Treasurer), Goy Sengmany (Parks Chair), and Daphne Titterson (Community Liaison).
A Look Into 2017
We have gained a lot of momentum this year with all that’s happened and plan on continuing this excitement moving forward. Here are a few things to expect in the New Year.
A State-of-the-Art School
A new state-of-the-art school is taking shape and residents are excited to have a school close to home. École Sage Creek School, set to open in fall of 2017, will have cutting-edge education practices for those in early learning up to grade 8. A special two-storey Learning Commons will function as both the library and a flexible gathering space. Stay up to date with the progress over at the École Sage Creek School website.
Progress on the Cell Tower
We look forward to working with Rogers Communications on moving their cell tower forward. There was an overwhelming amount input from the residents when the discussion started and the demand for the tower is known.
Adapting to Growth Fees
This fall, the City of Winnipeg passed the Impact Fee By-law (previously called ‘Growth Fees’), which will affect the cost of new home purchases in Winnipeg. Qualico Communities is working closely with the Manitoba Home Builders Association and the Urban Development Institute to monitor the impacts of the fees once they are implemented and how the fees will impact further development of Sage Creek's retail, mixed use and residential areas.
Sage Creek Sidewalk Survey
Qualico Communities is involved in stakeholder consultations with the City of Winnipeg regarding the installation of sidewalks on all residential streets in new communities. To ensure Qualico Communities represented the voice of its residents' in the discussions, we conducted a survey to hear your thoughts on sidewalks, safety, and walkability in the community.
The recent survey of 311 Sage Creek residents (or approximately 21% of households) found that most (71%) felt that their community was already very safe and walkable. In fact, only 22.8% of Sage Creek residents surveyed supported the proposal, while 77.2% of residents opposed or strongly opposed imposing more sidewalks.
We’ll continue to keep residents informed as the process moves forward, as well as work to ensure that those responsible for planning in our community are aware of Sage Creek residents opinions with regards to community design, accessibility, safety, maintenance issues and spending priorities.
It has been an exciting year full of growth and expansion, which makes for a year worth celebrating. From all of us at Qualico Communities, we hope you have peace and happiness in the year to come.
